Hello, hoosiers and friends!
I am, as the title suggests, back home in Indiana. It’s feeling balmy and rosy like this golden hour pic of the pristine new Vaseline Lip Therapy tin my mom had waiting for me when I got here.
My lips are hydrated. The humidity feels like a warm hug. The windows are open, and the breeze is breezing. My family of six is under one roof. Life is good.
The Midwest gets a bad rap. Did I drive behind a bubblegum pink SUV with a back window sticker reading, “Live, Laugh, Love. And if that doesn’t work, Load, Aim, Fire – Barbie, “ in the Barbie font today? Yes. Do I agree with the sentiment? Absolutely not. Do I think it’s impressive and alarming the lengths to which the Barbie movie will go to promote the film in Middle America? Oh yeah.
But for every deranged window sticker, there are many more strangers holding doors, passersby smiling, and neighbors waving. Not to mention the Longs donuts and Ben’s pretzels, and Vito’s chicken marsala. Plus Mamaw’s backyard doodahs and Mom’s home cooking, and Dad’s biscuits and gravy.
For all its quirks and qualms, it’s really good to be home. So I’m going to spend a little less time typing and a little more in the Indiana sun.
